Kunqu Opera

Shanghai Conservatory of Music

Shanghai (CN) – 2013

The Shanghai Music Conservatory hosted the Kunqu Opera as part of the Electronic Music Week. We developed a sound scenography concept that differed from typical live sound reinforcement, resembling more of an augmented reality experience. Despite over a hundred loudspeakers, their physical presence faded into the background during the performance, and the natural voices of the singers remained untouched and unamplified. Instead, microphones discreetly placed in their clothing captured their voices and channeled the sound signals into a 3D room simulation. Instead of massive volumes, a spacious environment emerged, fostering maximum immersion in the present moment. Our takeaway: To create beautiful moments, we don’t have to end up with high decibels and sounds coming from all directions all the time just because we have so many speakers installed. It’s like on the piano – just because you have many keys doesn’t mean you must hammer them all with full force.
