Life in the Dark:sound space "Night"

LWL Museum of Natural History

Münster (DE) – 2015

The LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster hosted a special exhibition titled “Life in the dark,” which explored how various animals and plants adapt to darkness. TAUCHER created the exhibit “The Sound of the Night”, where visitors experience two extraordinary, nocturnal ecosystems. As you step into the softly illuminated room, you’re enveloped in an atmosphere reminiscent of a moonless night, where visibility is limited, creating an aura of mystery. Instead of relying on sight, you embark on a auditory expedition into the vibrant soundscapes filled with the enchanting calls, intricate conversations, and melodious songs of native wildlife from two distinct habitats: the lush Amazon rainforest and the arid Sonoran Desert, nestled along the border of the USA and Mexico. Exploring specialized libraries, we have meticulously curated original recordings of the diverse animal species native to these regions, allowing for a credible auditory representation of these unique environments. The exhibition features an immersive sound system, designed specifically for this experience, with three levels of speakers that bring the symphony of voices to life. Sounds echo from the forest floor, resonate in the canopies, and soar above in the twilight skies, creating a multi-dimensional listening experience that captures the essence of life after dark.
