Humboldt Forum, Ethnological Museum

Berlin (DE) – 2021

The Humboldt Forum in Berlin opened to the public, featuring an immersive listening space within the Ethnological Museum. One highlight of its inaugural show was Marc Sinan’s composition Oksus, a chamber music suite for guitar, clarinet, harpsichord, percussion, and documentary recordings. It highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Oxus region and is a testament to the resilience of traditional cultures and the urgent need to preserve them in the face of modern challenges. Conceived initially for public radio, we were commissioned to create a new interpretation to be presented in the Ethnological Museum’s listening space. We rearranged elements of the original composition, developed site-specific scenography and dramaturgy, and incorporated intricate sound design during spatial mixing. The re-interpretation interacts dynamically with complementary visual elements exposed through a cluster of video screens built into the gallery walls. Immersed in the Oxus region’s cultural and ecological history, the experience’s spatiality is firmly anchored in the museum’s physical space. Some design elements dissolve the architectural walls, expanding the visitor’s horizons to adopt individual perspectives in this spirited journey.
