Brandenburger Tor Museum

Berlin (DE) · 2016

A museum project of cinematic scale. The museum, located directly at the iconic Pariser Platz, offered a journey through over 300 years of Berlin’s eventful history. We collaborated with @TriadBerlin (now @neonextberlin) to create an expansive, truly immersive cinematic experience. The 20-minute film was showcased on a large-format 30-meter screen comprising 86 LED panels, enveloping the room and featuring a blend of documentary footage, photographs, and animations. In order to reach an international audience, we aimed to overcome language barriers and showcase the city’s history using historical recordings, sound design, and an original score by our versatile composer Felix Rösch. Felix drew inspiration from various musical styles, including Baroque and electronic, to create the score. The real difficulty, however, was that the room was completely covered with glass panels, which looked fantastic but caused acoustic reflections that made working with sound a real challenge. We needed twice as much time as initially planned for the mixing on-site. However, the final result was just as crisp and bright as we would expect from a blockbuster-style movie. What made our work so appealing was the attention to detail with which we could stage the space. Projecting 438 mixing channels onto a cluster of 32 loudspeakers and 6 subwoofers allowed us to position every sound detail in time and space with pinpoint accuracy. After the museum closed, the Bertelsmann Stiftung took over the immersive movie installation on the premises opposite the new Humboldt Forum. In cooperation with the German Children and Youth Foundation, workshops on historical and political education for school classes are held there.
