Altenburg (DE) – 2018
We collaborated with author and artist Paul Plamper on the final part of his trilogy, Der Absprung (The Jump), to create an immersive, site-specific multi-channel audio installation debuting at the historic Residenzschloss Altenburg. The installation blended fictional storytelling with real-life issues and offered commentary on contemporary societal issues. The story is set in a fictional small town experiencing a decline in population. Tensions arise within the community due to the arrival of refugees, and the town becomes the center of a media storm, facing allegations of racism and regional prejudices. We designed a loudspeaker sculpture with speakers at eye level. The individual loudspeakers are potential performance positions for the protagonists as they move around the stage. Sound effects from floor speakers and a subwoofer articulate their movements. Additional speakers placed across the courtyard merged the fictional and real environments, intertwining the drama with the space and the city. By transforming the castle courtyard into a living stage, the audience was invited to take on different spatial perspectives as the narrative unfolded, enabling them to form intimate relationships with the virtual protagonists. The complex soundscape subtly merged the imaginary world with the actual place, prompting reflection on the themes of demarcation, identity, and confrontation with the unknown.
